Therapy and Rehabilitation

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy in home health focuses on restoring movement and physical function after illness, injury, or surgery.

  • Evaluate mobility, strength, balance, and fall risk
  • Create a personalized exercise plan based on the patient’s home environment
  • Provide:
    • Walking (gait) training
    • Strength and endurance exercises
    • Balance and fall-prevention training
    • Transfer training (bed ↔ chair, standing, etc.)

Therapists may also use techniques like neuromuscular re-education to help muscles and nerves work together again.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy focuses on helping patients regain independence in everyday activities—especially after illness, injury, or disability.

  • Assess the patient’s ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Teach or retrain skills like:
    • Bathing, dressing, eating
    • Cooking and household tasks
  • Introduce adaptive techniques or equipment (grab bars, shower chairs, etc.)
  • Improve motor skills, coordination, and energy use

OT is a goal-directed therapy designed to restore physical, cognitive, and functional abilities needed for daily life.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy (speech-language pathology) addresses communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders, often after stroke, neurological conditions, or injury.

  • Evaluate speech, language, and cognitive function
  • Provide treatment for:
    • Speech clarity and voice control
    • Language understanding and expression
    • Memory and cognitive communication
  • Treat swallowing disorders (dysphagia) to ensure safe eating
  • Teach alternative communication methods if needed

Therapists may use exercises, retraining techniques, and communication strategies tailored to the patient’s condition.
